Gathering wild herbs in the Colorado mountains

We are located in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, high up on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide. Fresh mountain air, crystal clear water, and rich fertile soil provide the ideal growing place for a wide diversity of medicinal and edible wild plants. We gather many of our plants from the surrounding mountain and desert areas.

Wandering through the hills around my home, I am constantly amazed by the number of intriguing and useful herbs that grow wild in this semi-arid climate, plants that many people would likely think of as nothing more than "weeds." But in reality, these humble, simple-looking plants have been used for centuries to treat all manner of discomfort and disease.

Wise men and women, healers and herbalists, around the world, have handed down to us various ways to use these same herbs to treat nearly all types of illness, simply and safely, and also ways to use various herbs for cosmetic and culinary purposes. These traditional uses still work and assure us that in many cases we do not have to submit to the use of pharmaceuticals, irradiation, and other medicinal practices that may be unsafe and have not stood the test of time.

We believe the growing interest in herbal medicine for human health results from concerns about our planet’s health. Ethical wild harvesting requires stewardship and protection of our wild places. Artemisia Botanicals Company practices ethical wild harvesting. We only harvest a small portion of the plant, and we make sure to plant back things like root crowns and seeds; and, of course, we make sure we are harvesting at the proper time for full potency.

Even so, we're finding that because of renewed interest in herbal medicines worldwide, our growing business does impact the environment—we’re very conscientious about that. Therefore, I am depending less and less on wild harvesting and more on organic growers. To me, you can't make good medicine unless you keep sustainability and ethical practices in mind. I really want people to know how much good energy goes into making our products.
