Frequently Asked Questions:
Here are some of the questions we are asked most often. If you have other questions, please call us toll free, 1-866-264-1150

How long before an herbal product works?
This is a loaded question since every herb, human system, and conditions must be considered. That said, it takes time to change situations that have been longstanding. Our rule of thumb is that for every year you have had an imbalance in your body, you need a month, if not more, to turn things around.

What is a tincture and how is it taken ?
A tincture is a potent liquid extract of herbs, best administered by adding drops to a bit of water, tea, or juice. All our tinctures are made by dry plant percolation in organic, pure grain alcohol and spring water to best preserve plant properties. The standard dose for adults is 20-60 drops, 3 x per day, roughly equivalent to a cup of an herbal infusion. Tinctures may conveniently be taken alone or in combination at any time of day, although best results for digestive and detoxification are achieved when taken before meals. Tinctures are one of the most effective ways to benefit from herbal properties as they are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.

How can I avoid the alcohol in tinctures?
The amount of alcohol in a single tincture dose is equivalent to about that in one ripe banana. To avoid alcohol, choose one of our less potent glycerite tinctures or disperse the alcohol by adding dosage drops to hot water for less than 5 minutes. A warm drink also dissipates most of the alcohol.

What amount of tincture is suggested for children?
Children respond exceedingly well to herbs, which must be selected with caution, as some herbal remedies are simply too potent for children in any amount. Children’s dosages must be adjusted to correspond with their weight. Standard dosages for children are determined using Clark’s Rule, which assumes the average adult weight is 150 pounds. By dividing the child’s weight by 150 pounds you get the percentage of an adult dosage to administer. Example using a 50 lb. child: 50 lbs./150 lbs. = 33%. Thus, if the adult dose is 60 drops of tincture, the child’s dose is 20 drops; likewise, the child would only take 1/3 cup of herbal tea, if the adult dosage is 1 cup. Our children’s glycerite formulas contain no alcohol for your child’s benefit.

We make about 85% of our products, whether medicinal herbs, body care products, or things I call "medicine for the soul." So, all of our salves, balms, lotions and potions are handmade here by myself and my incredible staff. — Jennie Blechman
